You do not have permission to add rows to this list

User has ‘Contribute’ access to the list and was able to add items to list using new item form. But whenever user tries to add items to list in data sheet view, this error comes up.

I verified for browser version (32 bit), Office installation version(32 bit), any issue with columns, rich text fields etc. Everything looks perfect, but user was still not able to add items through datasheet view.

After spending 30 mins online, I thought about similar issue I faced with Explorer view about which I blogged here. Thought it might be a similar one and BAM! That’s it. It is a permission issue. User have contribute access only to the list and no access(limited access) at site level.

Resolution: User needs to have atleast Read/View only access at site level for making using of datasheet view and explorer view options. Provided ‘View only’ access at site level for user and that fixed it. To edit in data sheet view, user needs access to some components which are at site level.

Hope this helps some one.
